Couples Therapy

Approximate length of each session:
60-90 mins

In our trauma-informed approach with couples, we explore what happened to each partner’s past, leading to the coping or survival skills they have. We also look at the impact of these coping strategies on distress happening in the current relationship. When couples see the bigger picture, they can often explore new ways to repair rifts, rebuild trust, and strengthen communication.

While couples come to us with a variety of issues, below are some examples of what we typically address is couples counseling:

  • Attachment issues

  • Boundaries

  • Communication struggles

  • Co-parenting

  • Conflict resolution

  • PTSD/trauma (one or both partners has experienced trauma, which is impacting the relationship)

The length of therapy will be determined by your needs and goals. However, it's recommended to schedule at least one session weekly during the initial phase of treatment. Sessions will often be phased out with 2-3 weeks breaks as you and your partner progress towards your goals. You may terminate treatment at any time, however it is helpful to have at least one session together to summarize progress, identify remaining work needed, and to say goodbye.

Please note that couples therapy is typically not covered by insurance, because no mental health diagnosis exists for this type of counseling. Please contact your insurance company for further details about your coverage.
